Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Paul Phillips

Dr. Phillips was raised in the Bay Area, and in 1991, he graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco. After graduation, he relocated to the charming neighborhood of East Sacramento to open his private practice.

Well respected in the community, Dr. Phillips is proud to say that the majority of his patients have been referral-based. He believes that a large part of his success is due to the fabulous staff he has brought together over the years.

Through ongoing education, Dr. Phillips and his team are able to offer a warm, friendly approach that is carefully combined with advanced technology that is simply unmatched.

Actively involved in the local dental community, Dr. Paul Phillips has served as the Membership Chair of the Sacramento District Dental Society. He also donates his time and effort to Smiles For Life, a program that has raised millions for various children’s charities.

With his wife Suzanne, Dr. Phillips enjoys all that Northern California has to offer; from lakes and trails to golf courses. He also enjoys visiting many of the local wineries and trying new restaurants.

Dr. Barry Dunn

Dr. Barry Dunn was born and raised in San Jose, CA. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of California, Davis. Following graduation, he lived in Sacramento for three years prior to moving to San Francisco for dental school. While in Sacramento, he worked at U.C. Davis Medical Center for one year on an Alzheimer’s disease study and then worked for two years on a breast cancer prevention study.

He graduated with high honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and was awarded a scholarship for academic excellence and character. While in school, he volunteered for community outreach programs and did a spring break dental mission in Cuzco, Peru.

Barry has two young sons. When he is not in the office, he enjoys running, cycling, training for triathlons, snowboarding, and many other outdoor activities

Dr. Gary M. Altenburg

Dr. Altenburg completed his dental training at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1998, earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. He was accepted into the General Practice Residency (GPR) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Diego, which he completed in 1999. He was then invited to attend the prestigious Endodontic Residency Program at the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia, the birthplace of contemporary endodontics.

Dr. Altenburg received his Endodontic Certification from Kornberg in 2001. Dr. Altenburg enjoys outdoor activities and RVing with his wife, three children and their dog, George. Dr. Altenburg has lectured internationally, has been an endodontic consultant and mentor for several dental study clubs and has served the community as an elected school district Trustee. Dr. Altenburg is a Specialist Member of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Erica Hsiao

Dr. Hsiao is thrilled to be part of the team at East Sac Dental! She earned her dental degree at UCLA, where she discovered her passion for periodontics, regeneration, and dental implants. This led her to the University of Illinois, Chicago, where she completed her Master’s degree and specialty training in Periodontics and Dental Implants. Dr. Hsiao is proud to be a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, the highest certification in her field.

She’s an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the Sacramento District Dental Society. Dr. Hsiao has a heart for service, volunteering her skills abroad in Honduras, teaching dental residents, and caring for Veterans at the VA McClellan Dental Service.

Dr. Hsiao loves connecting with her patients and working together to restore healthy smiles. When she’s not in the office, she enjoys pilates, baking sourdough, and scuba diving!

I am so glad I came to East Sac Dental. Since moving from the Bay Area, I've been trying to find a new dentist - with no success - until now. The office is very pretty and calming. All of the staff, from the dentist to the hygienist, to the assistant, and front desk, were friendly and professional. I have very difficult teeth and have had many dental procedures done, so a good dentist that I can trust is very important. I'm very pleased!

Best dental experience; and I have a lot of fear around dental care. I had a broken crown and a handful of other issues. East Sac Dental got me in the next day as a new patient. They took a conservative approach, which I truly appreciated. And the fact that they can get a permanent crown on me in the same day, because of the type of equipment they have in their office, is absolutely fantastic! I have found my new dentist.

Dr. Phillips and his staff truly excel at what they do. I have been a patient there for more than 20 years, and I always feel welcomed so warmly there, and know I’m always in very good hands.

LOVE LOVE LOVE EAST SAC DENTAL! My husband and I have been coming here for years and now started bringing our 4 kids. They are the best! Every single person that works here is always in a good mood, professional, and compassionate! All of the hygienists are super skilled and gentle and the dentists are all amazing! The office is like being in Beverly Hills.

The office is pristine, all employees are welcoming and professional, the technicians are all extremely proficient, and Dr. Philips is an amazing dentist. I highly recommend East Sac Dental dir all dental needs.

The staff here is warm and welcoming. Dr. Philips has been my dentist since 2000 and i trust him 100%. It wasn’t until i briefly had to see another dentist, that i realized just how special this practice is. As someone who has anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist, they always make me feel safe, taken care of and at ease.

Absolutely amazing staff! Dr. Dunn is extremely helpful and knowledgeable! Gave me great insight to my oral health and he genuinely cares. They don’t try to oversell you on things…which my previous dentist started to do when ownership changed.

Outstanding. I took my mom to fix her crown. Everyone was helpful and communication was clear. Even before we got there we had a good idea what to expect. The dr was very attentive, making sure to answer every question, listen to our needs and provide guidance.

My visit to the office today was beyond my expectations. The front desk staff were so friendly and accommodating. My favorite part of visiting East Sac Dental is that all of the plants and flowers are REAL! My hygienist today, Jess, was extremely thorough with my cleaning and had me laughing from the get. She gave me great feedback and advice for home care. Dr. Phillips is great as always and very personable. I always feel comfortable during my appointments. Of all the Dental offices around, I will gladly continue to make the drive to East Sac Dental.
